Why Not Wear Iconic Fancy Dress Costumes?

Everyone has to grow up. Of course, some do this quicker than others, but this has not managed to dampen Britain’s enthusiasm for dressing up. From playing as children to partying as adults, people are unfathomably keen to pull on a costume and prance about. These days, people are less inclined to simply go for traditional costumes. It’s not enough for people to head out dressed as just witches, fairies or ghosts now – when people dress up, they tend to want to dress as their favourite cartoon, film and comic book characters.

These costumes are so popular because of the iconic natures of the characters people are trying to emulate. Take Batman, for example. Created in 1939 by Bob Kane, Batman, the ghost of the night, scourge of criminals has spawned a wildly camp TV series, a huge range of merchandise and some of the highest-grossing films of all time. It is especially popular due to the sheer range of characters to dress up as. Men can dress up as Batman or his sidekick Robin, while girls can dress up as Batgirl or the villainous Poison Ivy. Such is the popularity of the characters that people even dress up as the villains – especially the Joker. After Jack Nicholson’s widely-lauded portrayal of Batman’s nemesis, Heath Ledger made the role his own in the most popular role of his tragically short career, winning a posthumous Oscar for the role. Coupled with the different interpretations of the character, people are keen to leave behind the witch and ghost costumes to inhabit the characters they love for a night.

Of course, Batman costumes may not be to everyone’s taste, because of course, not everyone is a fan of the character. Others may be keen to dress up as iconic film characters. Of course, the franchise that people turn to when looking for inspiration is generally the Star Wars saga. Those who are looking to go all out can dress up as the Wookie Chewbacca, or in any of Luke Skywalker’s iconic garbs. When consider women’s Star Wars costumes, people immediately think of the episode of Friends, when Rachel put on the gold bikini that Princess Leia wore in Return of the Jedi. Of course, this would be a rather cold outfit to wear out, but the white outfit and curled plaits from the first film would be an excellent fancy dress outfit – more original than a witch or ghost costume, and much more comfortable than a Stormtrooper outfit!

There are other, more recent cinematic characters that seem to have captured the public’s imagination. The character I am referring to, of course, is Captain Jack Sparrow. After Johnny Depp’s Oscar-nominated performance in Pirates of the Caribbean, the character has become an instant cultural icon. Of course, the success of a fancy dress costume all depends on how recognisable the outfit is. Dressed up in a Captain Jack Sparrow outfit, no one will be asking you who you are.

Sadly, there is not really a female equivalent to the Jack Sparrow costume – but then again, there is no male equivalent of the array of Disney princess outfits that women can dress up in. From Tinkerbell to Cinderella via Snow White and the Little Mermaid, there is a fantastic array of cultural icons for women to dress up in.
