Flapper dress costumes are based on the flapper girls that emerged from the roaring twenties. These young, independent women wanted to enjoy their lives and have a ton of fun. They were no longer satisfied with the traditional roles women played prior to the First World War. Bucking the societal norms of the day, these young girls also smoked long stem cigarettes, drank illegal alcoholic beverages, and frequented sleazy bars typically referred to as speakeasies.
Instead of long flowing dresses and tight corsets, flapper girls preferred to wear short, sexy mini dresses that were designed to have a square, almost shapeless appearance. Heavily applied sequins and layers of dripping fringe were also key elements of all flapper style dresses. Some flappers also liked to wear feathered boas and long beaded necklaces.
The key was to attract as much attention as humanly possible in the shortest amount of time.
