Thierry Mugler: Making Everyday Fashion A Memorable “Performance”
Thierry Mugler dabbles in dancing, photography, and fashion. Born French, he started as a window dresses in 1970 in a small tailoring shop in France. His first ever label was launched in 1974 while is men’s fashion line was born in 1978. Mugler’s designs became very popular for their exaggerated angular shapes. They boasted wide shoulders and pegged waistlines. His designs were welcomed whole-heartedly by the public triggering the launch of the first Thierry Mugler couture in 1992. The clothes that he makes are based on body aesthetics are created to be “performed.” Since then, his designs have been a huge favorite among men and women from all across the globe.
Mugler showcases a luxurious line of RTW dresses, jewelry, shoes, perfumes, body products, and leather accessories. His name once again became a big buzz in the industry when he designed the stage wardrobe for Beyoncé’s UK Tour. It showcased the most extravagant and extreme costumes Beyoncé ever wore. The singer admitted that she fell in love with Mugler’s creations when she attended the Costume Institute Gala in New York. Since then, she could not stop thinking about the fetishist appeal of models, cartoon heroines, biker chicks, and leather-metal inspired booties.
In September, 2010, Nicola Formichetti, editor and consultant, joined Mugler to become its new creative director. Formichetti is best known for her experimental and fashion-forward looks like Lady Gaga’s infamous “meat dress” at the MTV Video Music Awards. La Gaga is one of Formichetti’s most famous clients. In fact, the singer was tapped by Formichetti to create an exclusive soundtrack for one of the brand’s men’s wear shows.
