Pirate Fancy Dress: Factors to Consider When Choosing a Themed Costume For Women

Ladies – you shouldn’t have to feel neglected if you were asked to a pirate fancy dress party. Whilst we normally relate pirates with guys such as Captain Jack Sparrow, Long John Silver and Blackbeard, history informs us that women pirates also existed. Probably the most popular of these are Anne Bonny and Mary Read, two of the most notorious women buccaneers ever to sail the high seas in the 18th century. Numerous tales have surrounded them in the three hundred years ever since they were captured in the Carribbean and condemned to hang for their piracy offences. During that time in history, there was a rule of piracy which prohibit women crew members, so women pirates had to disguise themselves as men.  

So, if you are female and want to wear a pirate outfit as your fancy dress costume, what will you decide on? Well you might simply choose the same type of pirate fancy dress a guy would wear. Rather than choose a named figure such as Jack Sparrow or Black Beard and still have to battle with all that hair on your face, you will probably find it simpler to choose a generic pirate outfit which has more of a unisex appearance. As a man or woman, you can put on a bandana or pirate “Tricorn” head wear and eye patch and carry a phony hooked hand. You can put fake scars on to your face and use a huge gold earring. You can also don a tattered striped T-shirt, leather waistcoat and cut up some old slacks to mid-calf level. The skull and crossbones sailing logo could be imprinted on to any of these things.  

On the other hand, if you would like to go for a feminine look, you can buy specially made women’s pirate fancy dress costumes. There are several designs available that can bought from a specialist dealer in the High-street or purchased from the web in a range of sizes. One woman pirate outfit for sale consists of a dress which shows a white lace-up corset style top with off the shoulder sleeves and a black and red skirt. The black part of the skirt has a ragged pirate design hem. Yet another outfit is available which is very different from the usual pirate fancy dress and this is made up of flamboyant pink one piece pink coat with an integrated white frilly dress.
