In the French Quarter of New Orleans they celebrate Mardi Gras, to Brazilians it’s carnival, but the overall effect is the same on the eye – a mid-February riot of colour as flamboyantly  costumed revellers parade through the streets in an explosion of song and dance. Also known as Fat Tuesday – or Shrove Tuesday to the pancake-loving UK and Ireland – Mardi Gras is marked by worldwide spectaculars that draw thousands of onlookers who enter into the spirit of the occasion by dressing up, whether it be a ball gown with mask and matching accessories or equally eye-catching outfit. Let’s look at some mardi gras fancy dress ideas for the whole family.

INFANTS – Honestly, it doesn’t matter what you put your little darlings in as they are going to look adorable whatever, but you do have a choice of styles from pretty princess, cute teddy and funny spiders to dangerous dinosaurs among so many. Disney will always play a big part for kiddies of any age with a huge choice of costumes and themes. Infant fairy costumes are soooo popular with the likes of Sugar Plum Fairy and Tulip Fairy. ADULTS – For traditional ladies’ Mardi Gras costumes, you have a choice of little cute and sexy to full-blown cape with long gown and mask. It all depends on mood, but there is always something rather mysterious about not revealing your identity until midnight. Great if you want to hide. For the male, it is the same. Do you want to be the fun clown or jester? Or do you prefer to look exciting and mysterious, revealing yourself only at midnight? MARDI GRAS MASKS – A must-have at your Mardi Gras Party. Paint the whole face with your chosen green base colour, don’t forget to let each coat dry first, then add your shades and shadows around the eyes and mouth. Clown face painting is easy, too. Do a full face base coat of white, then add your red cheeks and nose, and don’t forget some blue crosses over the eyes. Spiderman is the same. A full red base coat, then, with a fine brush, carefully paint your spider’s web either on a cheek or over one side of the face. Ladybirds and bugs are also good. Use the right sized brush or stencils and add the spots as required.
