Halloween is not only just a kids’ holiday any longer. During the last 30-40 years, it is more popular then ever, with grown ups getting into the spirit along with children. And of all the Halloween traditions, costumes are the biggest one for everyone.
Right from the time kids are toddlers, they’re getting dressed up for Halloween (although for babies the excitement is more for the parents than the kids!)
There are just about limitless ideas for kids costumes, but the most used from one year to another are the licensed characters from their favorite movies and TV shows. And usually the most popular is any character from the past summer’s biggest hit movies.
More classic Halloween costumes like pirates, witches, ghosts and aliens always work too. As children get older, they usually get gorier every year. Artificial wounds, scars and blood are frequent sights with older trick-or-treaters. And the less their parents like it, the better.
Adult Halloween costumes are getting more popular every year as well. You will find lots of licensed costumes for adults and also a lot of the old standbys.
When adults get dressed up, they quite often like to stick to a theme – everyone at the party dresses according to theme or perhaps a couple will dress in complementing costumes of some kind.
Historical costumes like Renaissance or Medieval outfits are also popular with grown ups. Or “decade” costumes – flappers from the Roaring 20′s or a 40′s zoot suit.
One difference between children costumes and adults is that grown ups often put together their own costume, with more focus to the details. Children are perfectly satisfied with a costume that you bought in the local costume store.
Adult Halloween costumes can get quite elaborate – something that might be right at home on a movie set. Costume makeup and high quality masks and clothing are quite common.
Costume rental stores can help with getting all this together. A high quality costume can cost plenty of money and renting it might make sense, especially in order to have a different costume every year.
